The Hubbard Free Library Receives a Historic Preservation Fund Grant to support a Building Conditions Assessment.

Hallowell, Maine.   The Trustees of the Hubbard Free Library are excited to announce that they have received a 2024 Historic Preservation Fund grant to undertake a Building Conditions Assessment on the historic library The Historic Preservation Fund is administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior and the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.

A building conditions assessment is a detailed evaluation of historic building's current materials, features, and conditions, and is used to inform preservation, restoration, or rehabilitation planning.  This report will serve as a foundation for developing proactive strategies to ensure long-term preservation of the Hubbard, including maintenance and repair plans.  It will also help prioritize problem areas and determine the scope of work for future projects.

“We are honored to receive this Historic Preservation Fund grant from the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, which will enable us to protect and preserve The Hubbard Free Library for future generations,” said President of the Board of Trustees, Jill Lectka. “This funding will play a crucial role in ensuring that this important piece of history remains a vibrant part of our community.”

The Hubbard Free Library is first purpose-built library building in Maine. Preserving the Victorian Gothic structure, built in 1880 then expanded in 1893 and 1897, is core to the mission of the library.  The historic structure is an icon of Hallowell history and a key element of the Downtown Historic District.

The Hubbard will conduct a competitive bidding process to award the contract for the building conditions assessment in April 2025 for completion in Fall of 2025.
