• Will Stephen King be there?

Nope. This is a day celebrating literacy and a great Maine author, we do not expect Mr. King to be in attendance at any time during the day.

What kind of stuff can we do?

You can do any activity or event that adheres to the following:

    • Some relation to a King book, story, or film - be creative! An adult Big Wheel race to honor The Shining, a Prom to celebrate Carrie, Gunslinger Burritos to celebrate The Dark Tower or whatever your heart desires.
    • You have the space and resources you need to do the activity or event, and are able to obtain any rights needed (i.e., screening rights for a movie).
    • Your event takes place on May 17th, 2025 and you collaborate on scheduling with the SKD committee.

We don’t want to host an event - but we can sponsor an event. How do we do that?

We have plenty of sponsorship opportunities.

Check out our sponsor interest page here.
  • Why May 17th?

This is the day that Johnny wakes up from his coma in The Dead Zone... and this year it's when Hallowell is celebrating Maine's most prolific and popular author with a day of themed events and activities.

    Is this a family-friendly event?

We hope to have some events specifically for kids and families, but please remember that Stephen King's works are not typically for child audiences and there may be events or costumes that are frightening; you know your child(ren) better than we do.

  • Why Stephen King?

We want to find ways to celebrate how literature, our library, and Maine intersect. Stephen King is an uncontested Son of Maine who has reached a level of literary success shared by very few writers. Our library has nearly a bookcase of his works, he was an easy choice.

    Why a Stephen King Day?

The initial impetus was to create a library-led event that would involve the whole community - the community forum in 2019 identified several areas that the public wanted to see the library expand into, and collaboration with community organizations was one of those areas.

As I began to discuss the idea with others, a second reason evolved - this concept ignites the passion of almost everyone I've spoken with. Almost to a person people have reacted almost viscerally and immediately with their favorite King story and almost always on the heels of that revelation have shared an idea for an event or activity that “Hallowell is perfect for” related to that book - a paper boat race on the river, a pet (sematary) costume contest, and more.
